Removing mould from a sofa or mattress is not just a matter of appearance — it is a health issue. Mould spores are a recognised allergen, can irritate the airways with longer contact, intensify asthma and become a burden especially for children, older people and allergy sufferers. This guide shows honestly: what causes mould on upholstery in the first place, how to recognise it correctly, what you can do yourself — and when the upholstery or mattress can no longer be saved and replacement is the more honest solution.
Important: not every mould automatically means «throw the sofa away». Surface mildew spots can often be saved — black mould in the upholstery core usually cannot.
Short answer
Mould on a sofa or mattress arises from moisture + organic material (skin flakes, sweat, dust) + warmth. Surface mould spots on robust fabric can often be treated with diluted alcohol or vinegar essence. Black mould, deep discolouration or a mould smell from the upholstery core are usually a sign of extensive infestation — here a professional deep cleaning or replacing the upholstery is usually the right choice.
Can a mouldy sofa or mattress still be saved?
| Situation | Usually salvageable? |
|---|---|
| Small mildew spots | ✓ usually yes |
| Musty smell without visible spots | ⚠ sometimes — professional assessment recommended |
| Black mould, small-area surface | ⚠ depending on the material |
| Black mould large-area | ✗ often no |
| Deep mould in the foam core | ✗ rarely — replacement is more honest |
| High-quality sofa / boxspring + fresh infestation | ✓ rather yes, with professional cleaning |
| Recurring mould despite cleaning | ✗ the cause must be fixed first |
Rule of thumb: the deeper the mould sits and the stronger the smell from the upholstery core, the lower the chances of a successful cleaning. With fresh, surface infestation a sofa or mattress can often still be saved.
Quick diagnosis: which mould — what to do?
| Sign | Likely location | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small light spots (mildew) on cover fabric | Surface | Home remedies + drying |
| Greenish-grey coating on the upholstery surface | Starting mould | Home remedies + fix the cause (moisture) |
| Black spots, hard to remove | Deep in the upholstery | Professional assessment or upholstery replacement |
| Musty smell from the upholstery core | Mould in the foam | Deep cleaning or replacement |
| Mould on the mattress underside | Condensation under the mattress | Slatted-frame ventilation + replacement if needed |
| Mould + respiratory problems in the household | Health risk | Professional immediately + medical assessment |

Why does mould form on a sofa and mattress?
Mould is everywhere in the air — as invisible spores. It only grows into a visible problem when three conditions are present at the same time:
- Moisture — the most common cause. Over 60% humidity for a longer period is enough. Ideal is a permanent 40–60% humidity in living spaces.
- Organic material — skin flakes, sweat, dust, food residues. There is always some of this on upholstery.
- Warmth — typical room temperature is entirely enough.
Typical triggers in Swiss households:
- Poorly ventilated rooms in winter (heating on, windows closed)
- Water damage — a burst pipe, flooding, a leaked water bottle, a leaky window
- Sweat moisture in the mattress, especially with a poorly ventilated slatted frame
- Overly wet DIY cleaning with a household steam cleaner without sufficient drying
- A sofa directly against an exterior wall (cold wall → condensation → mould)
- Cellar/ground moisture in ground-floor flats
- Taken-over furniture from damp storage or a second-hand shop
Anyone who does not fix the cause has the mould back after 4–8 weeks — no matter how thoroughly it was cleaned. That is the most important point in this guide.
Recognising mould: colours, smell, typical spots
Mould on upholstery shows up in several ways:
Visually:
- Mildew spots — small, light to brownish dots, often on the cover fabric. Early stage.
- Green or grey coating — starting mould on the surface.
- Black spots — advanced infestation, often already deep in the upholstery. Hard to reverse.
- White fluff — rare, indicates a particularly damp environment.
Colours & their typical meaning:
| Colour | Often means |
|---|---|
| White | moisture / early stage |
| Grey / green | active mould |
| Black | deep or older infestation |
| Brown | older mildew spots |
By smell:
- A musty, mouldy smell — even when nothing is visible, mould can grow in the upholstery core
- An earthy-damp smell — typical for mould on the mattress underside
Typical spots:
- Sofa: backrest near an exterior wall, seating surface under removed cushions, under the sofa towards the wall
- Mattress: underside (slatted-frame contact), side walls, at damp spots where the body lies
- Both: folds and seams where moisture stays longer
Important: if you see mould, you should assume that further spores are already active in other places. Mould often spreads invisibly.
Health risks of mould in upholstery
Mould spores are a recognised indoor allergen. Possible health effects with longer exposure:
- Allergic reactions — a blocked nose, red eyes, sneezing
- Intensification of asthma and allergic respiratory diseases
- Skin irritation and eczema flare-ups, especially in children
- Some people also report tiredness or headaches, particularly with permanently damp indoor spaces
- Increased risk of respiratory infections (especially with a weakened immune system)
- Risk groups: infants, toddlers, older people, asthmatics, allergy sufferers, pregnant women, immunocompromised people
Clear recommendation: if someone in the household has respiratory problems, a persistent cough or worsened allergy symptoms and mould is visible — speak to your GP first. Cleaning the upholstery is important, but it does not replace a medical assessment. People with allergies often react more strongly — more on this in our guide upholstery cleaning for allergies and asthma. Further information on indoor mould can be found at the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (BAG).
Immediate measures: what you should do now
If you discover mould on a sofa or mattress, do these five steps in this order:
- Wear respiratory protection — an FFP2/FFP3 mask if you do the cleaning yourself. Mould spores are stirred up during the work.
- Air the rooms — open the windows fully, ideally a draught for 30+ minutes. Important before and during every treatment.
- Remove affected covers — everything removable (cushion covers, fitted covers), wash at at least 60 °C (check the care label)
- Identify the cause — water damage? Poor ventilation? An exterior wall? A slatted frame? Without answering this question, no cleaning is worthwhile
- For large-area or black mould — do not attempt the cleaning yourself, but get an assessment from a professional or a mould expert
Do not do:
- Do not dry-brush the mould (spreads the spores into the room air)
- Do not vacuum the mould without a HEPA filter (same reason)
- Do not treat the upholstery too wet — new mould threatens
Home remedies against mould in upholstery compared
| Agent | Effect against mould | How to use | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Isopropanol 70% (pharmacy alcohol) | Kills mould fungi on the surface | Apply to a cloth, dab the affected spot (do not soak), let dry | ✓ effective for surface infestation |
| Vinegar essence (25%), diluted 1:1 with water | Can reduce surface mould, but does not replace fixing the cause | Dab spots, let it work, dab off, air well | ⚠ supportive, ✗ strong own smell |
| Hydrogen peroxide 3% | Effective, less smell than vinegar | Mist finely with a spray bottle, let it work, dab off | ✓ good, ⚠ can bleach colours |
| Baking soda / baking powder | Dries residual moisture, neutralises light odour | After cleaning, sprinkle on the spot, leave 12 h, vacuum | ⚠ supportive, does not kill mould directly |
| Special mould removers (sprays) | Chlorine-based, very effective | Check the care label, only on robust fabrics | ⚠ caution on skin contact, air well, not in the children's room |
| Sun / UV light | UV reduces spores on the surface | Place covers or small cushions in the sun | ✓ supportive, not enough for deeper infestation |
| Household steam cleaner | Heat kills mould partly | Check the care label, low level | ⚠ increases moisture — risky without controlled drying |
| Too much water / wet cleaning | No mould effect | A DIY mistake with mould | ✗ creates new mould — the main cause of relapse |
| Professional deep cleaning with a suitable cleaning solution against mould | Dissolves spores from deeper layers, controlled drying | On-site service with a material check | ✓ the most effective method for deeper-seated infestation |
Rule of thumb: home remedies can reduce surface, fresh mould — if the moisture cause is fixed at the same time. For deep or recurring infestation they are not enough.
Mould is more than an appearance problem. With visible infestation — especially with respiratory problems in the household — let us assess in advance, free of charge, whether a cleaning still makes sense in your case or the upholstery should be replaced.
When is cleaning enough — when must the upholstery go?
An honest answer, because money is often invested here in unrealistic cleanings:
Cleaning is worthwhile when:
- Surface infestation on as-new or well-maintained upholstery
- Mildew spots or starting mould without a smell from the core
- The foam core is in good condition (younger than 8–10 years, not decayed)
- The cause is identifiable and fixable (water damage fixed, ventilation improved)
- High-quality furniture — a designer sofa, a boxspring mattress
Replacing the upholstery or mattress is more honest when:
- Black mould over a large area or visible in the foam core
- A musty smell remains despite cleaning
- The foam is already decayed or older than 10 years
- Recurring infestation despite several cleaning attempts
- Infestation on mattresses used daily by children or people with pre-existing health conditions — here replacement is the safer choice when in doubt
- Cleaning costs » the residual value of the upholstery
| Situation | Usually sensible |
|---|---|
| Fresh mildew spot on a new sofa | Cleaning |
| Mould smell + visible infestation in the foam core | Upholstery replacement |
| Mattress over 8 years + mould on the underside | Replacement (with a slatted-frame check) |
| High-quality designer sofa with surface infestation | Cleaning with professional deep extraction |
| Cheap couch + large-area black mould | Replacement |
| Mould + toddler or allergy sufferer in the household | When in doubt replacement, seek medical advice |
Professional mould cleaning of a sofa & mattress
For surface or moderate infestation, a professional upholstery cleaning can help to reduce mould on a sofa or mattress and dissolve deep-seated soiling from the upholstery layers. We work on site in Switzerland with deep extraction, a controlled amount of water and targeted drying — important precisely with mould, because additional residual moisture otherwise makes the problem worse. Before every cleaning we check the material, the moisture situation and the realistic chances of success — because not every mouldy sofa or mattress can be sensibly saved.
At Just Clean KLG we honestly assess the upholstery for feasibility before the work. We decline jobs where a cleaning makes no economic or health sense — and say so openly instead of charging for expensive treatments without prospects.
With a musty smell without visible spots, there may additionally be an odour problem in the upholstery core — more on this: sofa smells — removing a musty smell from upholstery.
More on this: what a professional upholstery cleaning costs in Switzerland.
When we decline a cleaning
We earn money with upholstery cleaning — and yet there are cases in which we clearly recommend not cleaning the upholstery. An honest «no» recommendation is more important to us than a sold job with no prospect of success.
We typically decline the cleaning or strongly advise against it when:
- Black mould deep in the foam core is visible or evidenced by smell
- A health-critical situation exists in the household (an infant, a severe allergy, asthma) and the infestation is strong
- The cleaning makes no economic sense — e.g. cleaning costs exceed the residual value of the upholstery
- Recurring infestation without the cause (slatted frame, exterior wall, water damage, ventilation) being fixed
- The upholstery already shows decayed foam — a cleaning changes the material further, the benefit is small
In such cases we recommend replacement or further measures (a mould expert, a flat inspection, medical advice).
Frequently asked questions about mould on a sofa and mattress
How do I get mould out of the sofa?
For surface contamination, treat with isopropanol 70% or diluted vinegar essence, dry thoroughly and above all fix the cause (moisture). For deep or black mould, a professional deep cleaning or replacing the upholstery makes more sense.
What to do about mould in the mattress?
First check the underside — that is where mould most often appears. Improve slatted-frame ventilation, dry the mattress, treat surface contamination with alcohol. For deep mould in the foam core: honestly — replacement is usually the safer choice, especially for mattresses used daily.
Does vinegar help against mould in upholstery?
Yes, diluted vinegar essence can reduce surface mould on robust fabrics. However, it does not replace fixing the cause and usually is not enough for deep contamination. On delicate fabrics, test on a hidden spot first.
Which home remedy is best against mould on the sofa?
Isopropanol 70% from the pharmacy is usually the best choice: effective, less of its own smell than vinegar, less bleaching than hydrogen peroxide. Important: do not soak, only dab, then dry well.
Is mould on the mattress dangerous?
Mould spores are a recognised allergen and can irritate the airways, intensify allergies and worsen asthma. Particularly delicate with children, allergy sufferers, pregnant women and immunocompromised people. With symptoms + visible mould: a medical assessment is recommended.
Can mould on the sofa be professionally removed?
Yes, for surface or moderate infestation. We combine deep cleaning, suitable cleaning solutions against mould and controlled drying. For very heavy infestation we say honestly in advance whether a cleaning makes sense or a replacement would be better.
Why does the mould come back after cleaning?
Because the cause (moisture, poor ventilation, a cold exterior wall, a faulty slatted frame) was not fixed. Mould is always a symptom — without removing the cause it comes back, no matter how thoroughly it was cleaned.
What does a professional mould treatment on upholstery cost?
The price depends on material, degree of infestation and size. We name the exact price before the work begins. Orientation in the cost guide Switzerland 2026.
Can I keep sleeping on a mattress with mould?
With visible mould — better not, especially not with children, allergy sufferers or existing respiratory problems. Until it is clarified, you can turn the mattress, air it well and find an interim solution.
Do I have to throw away the sofa if there is mould in it?
Not necessarily. For surface infestation a professional cleaning is often enough. For deep-seated black mould, a musty smell from the foam core or older upholstery, replacement is usually the more honest solution — we tell you before the work what is realistic in your case.
Is black mould on the mattress dangerous?
Visible black mould should generally be taken seriously — it is widely regarded as particularly problematic for indoor spaces and airways. For visible black mould on a mattress that is slept on daily — especially with children, allergy sufferers or people with pre-existing health conditions — we clearly recommend replacement and a medical assessment if there are symptoms.
Can mould in the sofa be invisible?
Yes. Mould in the foam core or between upholstery layers is often only noticeable by smell (musty, earthy) before it becomes visible. If a sofa smells musty without an identifiable source, a professional assessment is sensible.
What does mould in the sofa smell like?
Typically musty-earthy, sometimes slightly sweetish, often described as a «damp cellar» smell. Unlike smoke or pet odour, it does not disappear even after airing.
Can I remove mould with a steam cleaner?
Be careful. Steam can reduce surface mould, but additional moisture without controlled drying often creates new mould problems — especially in the foam core. With visible mould, a professional treatment with a controlled amount of water is safer.

Why we take this topic seriously
Mould on upholstery is not just an appearance or odour problem — it is a health topic, especially for families with children, allergy sufferers or older people. We say honestly before the work whether a cleaning makes sense in your specific case or whether replacing the upholstery would be the safer and, in the end, more economically sensible solution.
